About the Author
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin, b. June 6 (N.S.), 1799, d. Feb. 10 (N.S.), 1837, was Russia's greatest poet. His use of the vernacular as the language of poetry freed Russian writing from the constraints of tradition and set new literary standards for novelists and poets, and his preference for subjects from history and folklore brought fresh vitality to Russian literature. Anthony Briggs, Professor of Russian at Birmingham University, Senior Research Fellow at Bristol University, is a well-known writer and broadcaster on Russian cultural affairs and European poetry. His recent translation of War and Peace was critically acclaimed. Among his many publications are six editions in the Everyman's Poetry series.

Good, fast fun
By epic phlegm Hooha
This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by up to ten other poets, but 33 of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs. Briggs also revised the translation of the 57th. Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.
The Contents lists the titles of the poems, and the Introduction explains poetic qualities which the translations in this volume attempt to match, "partly to ensure that interesting formal properties like these are not lost." (p. xv). The first paragraph on page xvi attempts to show how the poems "are grouped roughly thematically," into personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, for the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN, Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

On the cutting edge of letting it all hang out.
By epic phlegm Hooha
This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by nine other poets, but most (33) of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs, who has devoted four books to Pushkin and has also edited four other volumes in the Everyman's Poetry series. Briggs also revised Chapter 8 of Oliver Elton's translation of Yevgeny Onegin, which he describes in the Introduction as, "A few stanzas from the end of the novel are included here in order to give a general impression of how the novel works." (p. xvii). Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield [this mistake might be due to the enormous number of actual cornfields that currently exist on this planet] and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.
The Contents lists the titles of the poems, and the Introduction explains poetic qualities which the translations in this volume attempt to match, "partly to ensure that interesting formal properties like these are not lost." (p. xv). The first paragraph on page xvi attempts to show how the poems "are grouped roughly thematically," into the order in which the themes are encountered in the first poem in this book, "Winter. What shall we do out in the country?" Pushkin's major themes are identified as the personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, and his poems on those topics comprise the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN (which has 366 stanzas altogether), Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
The poems "Remembrance" and "Elegy" are mentioned as examples of a Pushkinian philosophy of life. Thoughts "Settle in limpid twilight languidly distilled," as the third line of the poem "Remembrance" puts it. Pushkin is capable of other feats, and the introduction observes that one long poem, "(known in Russian as `Gavriiliada' after the angel Gabriel) is an overtly sacreligious re-enactment of several Bible stories (Adam and Eve, Joseph and Mary, the Annunciation, etc.) run together into an extended sexual romp." (p. xviii). This kind of thing is usually considered a catastrophe, as far as serious philosophy is concerned, and "In its day Pushkin could not acknowledge authorship; neither could Russian criticism until recently." (p. xviii). It reminds me of the poem, "the boys i mean are not refined," by e. e. cummings, which was only included in a limited edition of nine copies of his book, NO THANKS, in 1935, but was dropped in subsequent editions until after his death in 1962. Similarly, the introduction by A. D. P. Briggs notices Pushkin's use of "swearwords in `The Waggon of Life'," (p. xix) which Briggs called, "language unusable until recent times in both Russia and England." (p. xvii). Anything that I might say about such language might be considered totally off the subject here, but a revisionist view of the relationship between poetry and philosophy might make some personal comments appropriate here.
As author of the unpublished, unedited, and largely unwritten MY VIETNAM WAR JOKE BOOK, any claim that I might make to knowledge of philosophy is highly suspect, similarly to the status achieved by Martin Heidegger when he is considered the Nazi philosopher. In my case, the must dubious aspect of convergence might be expressed by using the phrase *peace with honor* instead of any swearword that might appear. This could be catastrophic for the poetic values involved, but purely for philosophical reasons, I would like to insert *peace with honor* in place of the swearwords in Pushkin's poem, "The Waggon of Life." The second and third stanza become:
We climb aboard the boards at dawn
Full of wild devilment and crowing;
Spurning the lanquid life with scorn,
We cry, `Go on, get *peace with honor* going!'
But by midday we've lost that boldness,
Feeling the wagon shake and judder.
Dread are the heights and dizzy gorges,
We cry, `Slow down you silly *peace with honor*!'

From Publishers Weekly
Self-described "photo-illustrator" McMillan ( Mary Had a Little Lamb ; One, Two, One Pair! ) continues to focus his talents on the concept picture book--and once again brings his fresh perspective to this sometimes didactic genre. In this ingenious combination of fractions and food a perky pair of budding mathematicians, boy and girl, divide a series of foods into halves, thirds and quarters. After each division they (sometimes with help from a hungry dog) delightedly devour the whole thing. These kids, though obviously posed for the photos, seem to be really enjoying themselves; their pleasure and zest is contagious in the bright, almost shadowless images. Math was never so much fun or so wholesomely delicious. Recipes and suggestions for how children can use their new math skills to measure ingredients and prepare these kid-tested treats are included. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-- A mouth-watering introduction to fractions is served up by McMillan in this concept book. Full-color photos show one freckle-faced and one dark-skinned child preparing and eating an assortment of foods, each of which is pictured as a whole and then in either halves, thirds, or fourths. The progression from larger to smaller fractions is shown twice with different foods to reinforce the concept. The words for the fractions are given in very large print under the corresponding pictures along with their mathematical symbols. The foods--bananas, sweet rolls, pizza, corn, pear salad, and strawberry pie--look so appetizing that young readers will be eager to try the recipes given at the end of the book. None are difficult, and none use packaged foods or excessive sugar. The excellent photographs owe their appeal not only to their bright colors, clear focus, and good framing, but also to their winsome subjects, two infectiously happy children and a strawberry-pie eating shaggy dog. Ideal for food units in primary classrooms, this should see steady use in both school and public libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
Two winsome boys (one black, one white) share some yummy- looking food: a halved banana, a roll that breaks into thirds and thus can't be shared evenly, a quartered pizza. Each fraction is repeated; recipes are included (``Wiggle pear salad'' and strawberry pie round out a vegetarian meal). McMillan includes notes on techniques and materials that contributed to his beautiful, appealing photos and on the boys who posed. Another excellent multidimensional concept book from a creative bookmaker. (Nonfiction/Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

It then identifies and describes the advantages of this system, which needs less of everything including time, human effort, inventories, and investment to produce products with fewer defects in smaller volumes at lower costs for fragmenting markets. The Machine That Changed the World even gave the system its name: lean.

In the decade since its launch in the fall of 1990, The Machine That Changed the World has sold more than 600,000 copies in 11 languages and has introduced a whole generation of managers and engineers to lean thinking. No lean library is complete without this groundbreaking book.

"The fundamentals of this system are applicable to every industry across the globea[and] will have a profound effect on human society. It will truly change the world." - New York Times

From Library Journal
This provocative and highly readable book summarizes five years of research by the International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) at MIT into the role of the autmobile industry in the world economy. The authors, all directors of the IMVP, recommend that Western automobile makers adopt the concept of lean production in all phases of automobile production. A thorough and persuasive explanation of the benefits of lean production, along with numerous examples, mainly from Japanese industry, support their recommendations. This important book offers informed insight into the auto industry; for all public and academic libraries.

Excellent Business Book
By J. G. Heiser
I read this book while working for a major software firm--it was fascinating to me that Toyota could update their automobiles faster than we could bring out a new operating system.
This study of the world automotive industry by a group of MIT academics reaches the radical conclusion that the much vaunted Mercedes technicians are actually a throwback to the pre-industrial age, while Toyota is far ahead in costs and quality by building the automobiles correctly the first time. The lesson that it cost more to fix it than to build it correctly should be applicable to a lot of industries--not just manufacturing. The description of the marketing information system that Toyota uses was very enlightening. They involve the entire company in generating marketing feedback. Even dealer sales staff spend time working on the new product teams. Trust me, very few high-tech firms methodically collect feedback from their customers, and none have a system this comprehensive.
This is not just a book about lean production--this is guidance in understanding how your business operates and delivering good products that your customers want.

Still relevant
By Josh Yeager
I have not completed this book yet, but I'm very impressed. I've read the reviews that stated this information is dated and is more of a history lesson than a valuable resource, and that's not true. While the information and data was collected years ago, the lessons and ideas of lean manufacturing are still relevant. The comparison of craft vs mass vs lean is explained using the automotive industry as the setting, as Toyota is the pioneer in lean production. It's a much better read than Toyota Kata, and deserves a place in your collection if you work in a manufacturing environment.

A great example of how research can change an entire industry
By R. Simpson
I read this after taking a tour of the Toyota plant in Kentucky. Both the tour and the book helped me understand how Toyota changed much of industrial production. I only wish there was a final chapter to explain how the process originated by Toyota has spread throughout the automotive and other industries.

On the Edge of the Abyss: Lost Youth, Lost Innocence, & Carnage
By Gary F. Taylor
Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) was well established as a major talent by the 1944 THE GLASS MENAGERIE. By the end of the 1950s he was easily among the best regarded dramatists in world theatre. But although Williams continued writing until the year of his death, after about 1960 he found both critical and popular success increasingly elusive.

SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH opened in 1959 starring a remarkable pairing of Paul Newman and Geraldine Page and ran for about a year--but subsequent stagings and adaptations have not been as successful. A film version starring Newman and Page tampered with original script and emerged as stodgy instead of exciting; a major 1975 Broadway revival lasted fifty performances; and the play has not fared as well over time as such works as A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. It is rarely studied and rarely performed.

SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH concerns a handsome drifter named Chance Wayne who has been picked up by a neurotic and has-been movie star with the unlikely private name of The Princess Kosmonopolis and the stage name of Alexandra Del Lago. After a drug-and-alcohol fueled road trip through Florida, the two have arrived at the semi-resort community of St. Cloud, the location of which is not specified but which from other geographic references seems to be on the Mississippi gulf coast.

It happens that Chance has specifically come to St. Cloud in the hope of reuniting with his teenage love Heavenly Finley. We soon learn that on his last visit Chance gave Heavenly a nasty veneral disease that ultimately resulted in a hysterctomy, and that Chance has been warned away by Heavenly's father local political power Boss Finley, a vicious racist who is behind the recent castration of a black man accused of seducing white women. Heavenly's Aunt Nonnie and Boss Finley's mistress Miss Lucy warn him away; when Alexandra Del Lago recovers from her stupor and finds that her come-back film was a success, she too urges Chance to forget his young love, accept the fact that time has passed it by, and escape with her to California. But Chance refuses to leave, even though he knows that his efforts are futile, and the play ends with the strong implication that he too will be castrated by Boss Finley's minions.

There are several difficulties with the play. The first is that the story is essentially a re-writing of Williams earlier ORPHEUS DESCENDING, which was a horrendous failure on Broadway in 1957 but which is nonetheless a noticeably better script. SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is also somewhat awkward in its shifting between realism and theatricality, the plot is somewhat implausible, and the second act is weak. But perhaps the single most deadly problem facing SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is that there isn't a likeable character in the entire play, with the possible exception of movie star Alexandra Del Lago, who ultimately accepts herself for what she is and has the good sense to walk away before the carnage begins. And this too is yet another problem with the play: we are never allowed to see the carnage, we are only left to assume it.

All things considered, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is not among the genuinely great Williams plays, and indeed Williams would write only one other masterpiece, the 1961 NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, before beginning the rapid slide into alcohol and drugs that sapped his talents. But oddly, the very problems with SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH are what make it interesting, challenging, intriguing; one longs to see a really good staging of it and thereby know for certain if it works better on the stage than it does on the page. Interesting, but newcomers to Williams' work would do better to begin with the more obvious titles.

The Drone Memos: Targeted Killing, Secrecy, and the LawFrom New Press, The

The Drone Memos collects for the first time the legal and policy documents underlying the U.S. government’s deeply controversial practice of “targeted killing”—the extrajudicial killing of suspected terrorists and militants, typically using remotely piloted aircraft or “drones.” The documents—including the Presidential Policy Guidance that provides the framework for drone strikes today, Justice Department white papers addressing the assassination of an American citizen, and a highly classified legal memo that was published only after a landmark legal battle involving the ACLU, the New York Times, and the CIA—together constitute a remarkable effort to legitimize a practice that most human rights experts consider to be unlawful and that the United States has historically condemned.

In a lucid and provocative introduction, Jameel Jaffer, who led the ACLU legal team that secured the release of many of the documents, evaluates the “drone memos” in light of domestic and international law. He connects the documents’ legal abstractions to the real-world violence they allow, and makes the case that we are trading core principles of democracy and human rights for the illusion of security.

Review
Praise for Drone Memos:
“The collection should interest those concerned with the conduct of modern warfare, fought in the courtroom as well as on the battlefield.”
—Kirkus Reviews

"Democracies may be more fragile than we care to admit, existing perhaps one election from tyranny. At a time in history when those words blink red in the mind, this investigation shows the dangers of investing government with the power to kill suspected enemies in secret. Jaffer and his team perform a lasting public service by exposing the ‘targeted killing’ policies, and Jaffer’s introductory essay is a much-needed corrective to the linguistic manipulation and official obfuscation that have made these policies possible."
—Edward J. Snowden

"Few programs are more controversial than America’s use of killer drones. Whether for or against drones, every citizen should read the previously secret documents contained in this book, and thank the public-spirited lawyers who made them public."
—Jane Mayer

"The sad fact, as Jaffer notes, is that Democrats who protested when George W. Bush claimed broad war powers were quite willing to help Barack Obama claim even broader ones. The result is that the counterproductive, colossally wasteful, deeply unethical, and endlessly expanding ‘war on terror’ has now become a permanent bipartisan fixture of our foreign policy. Jaffer’s introduction is careful and fair—some might say too fair—but it is a devastating indictment of the irresponsible and short-sighted arguments that the Obama administration made in secret memos and then in open court."
—Glenn Greenwald

"An invaluable contribution to the literature on drone strikes. The documents, and Jaffer’s contextualization of them, provide a crucial glimpse into one of the United States government’s most shadowy, problematic and controversial programs."
—Farea al-Muslimi, chairman, Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies

"This important book shows how the Obama administration embraced the legal underpinnings of the ‘global war on terror’—as well as its secrecy, lethality, and lack of meaningful constraint. Jaffer’s astute commentary critiques U.S. drone policy as unlawful and potentially counterproductive. With a new administration soon to take office, the questions he raises are increasingly urgent."
—Joanne Mariner, senior crisis response adviser, Amnesty International

"This is a compelling expose of the sophisticated and concerted efforts by Obama Administration officials to thoroughly subvert the international rule of law in the pursuit of minor short-term military gains and at the expense of American credibility."
—Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions, 2004–2010

"Armed drones have given the United States the power to kill individuals anywhere, even far from conventional battlefields, but the United States has failed to articulate clear limits on their use—let alone subscribe to the limits imposed by international law. As Jaffer’s book makes clear, that failure has grave implications as the technology of killer drones inevitably spreads to other countries."
—Ken Roth, executive director, Human Rights Watch

Praise for Jameel Jaffer’s Administration of Torture:
"In gathering these truly telling documents Jaffer and Singh have distilled the essence of an evil that has shamed America. Exposing it can only help remove a terrible national stain."
—John W. Dean, Nixon White House counsel

"An extraordinarily important book.”
—Naomi Wolf, The Huffington Post

"An historic reminder of the dangers of curtailing human rights protections in the name of national security."
—Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

"An immensely useful resource."
—David Cole, The New York Review of Books

"The definitive evidence of the Bush-Cheney war crimes."
—Nat Hentoff, The Village Voice

About the Author
Jameel Jaffer is a deputy legal director of the ACLU. He led the ACLU legal team that sued for the release of the drone memos. He has written about the drone program for the New York Times, The Guardian, and the Harvard Law Review Forum among others and was listed by Foreign Policy magazine as a “Top 100 Global Thinker.” He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show, All In with Chris Hayes, and Democracy Now! and speaks regularly at venues including the American Bar Association’s annual convening, law schools, and ACLU affiliates across the country. This is an important book, now more than ever
By C. Olson
This book it pulls together and analyzes all of the key formerly secret documents that the government's targeted killing program has been based on. It draws the line from the paper policies and legal theories to the reality on the ground worldwide and their real-world consequences for lethal executive power.

From Publishers Weekly
The 18 stories in this debut collection range from the disquieting to the bizarre to the terrifying. One stands out for having all these qualities. A woman discovers a "flesh-colored hump" on her shoulder that cannot be removed. What is frightening is not the plot, which finishes on a vague note, but the woman's all-consuming obsession--"It might have been possible that the hump jiggled and swayed somewhat less now than it had when it first appeared, a month before; it seemed harder, and being harder, it also seemed smaller." Another chilling story concerns a miniature pet horse that seemingly becomes a metaphor for the psychological and sexual abuse of weaker creatures--"I would knead him then; he never struggled . . . and once, because I held him for so long, he began to howl." Other stories, including one about a self-abusing boy-man who hungrily stuffs himself with furniture and later becomes a judge, sacrifice internal logic for shock value. While some tales are successful for their rhythm and lyricism, the focus on the gruesome and the lack of character development make this a generally uneven work.

Seriously, buy and read her books. NOW!
By Mark Twain
Stacey Levine's collection, My Horse and Other Stories, and her novel Dra-, are among the most stunningly bizarre and pleasing works of fiction that I have ever read and I count them among only a handful of books that I frequently pick up and begin reading for writerly inspiration, as they defy categorization and never lose their capacity to surprise and amaze. Anyone who seeks writing in the tradition of Kafka and Kobo Abe will absolutely love these books. Publishers Weekly mentions "sacrificing internal logic," but a more accurate description might be either "redefining" it or "not succumbing" to it. If internal logic is tone and voice, then Stacey Levine's work introduces even the most jaded reader to something completely new. As a reviewer once wrote (apparently I am not supposed to refer to reviewers on this page), her writing is often both "simultaneously funny and disturbing," and combined with her rapturous lyricism, the effect is cathartic and out-of-body, even when the writing is explicitly exposing "the oppressive mechanisms" of the body itself, as the reviewer so aptly described it. Even the darkest and most disturbing passages cannot be called "gruesome" (as PW put it) because they are controlled so expertly by Levine's masterful tone that there is always a kind of strange otherworldly beauty that shines through, and humor, uproarious humor that suddenly wells up, making one want to immediately share it with whoever is around, including strangers, for these are among the most laugh-out-loud funny books I have ever read. Even in the darkest most blackly poetic scenes there is a kind of disturbingly giddy humor that makes one want to climb out of one's skin for joy. On the other hand, if what is meant by "internal logic" is the trite conventionality and expectation that continues to hold morbid sway over the dominating and overspent traditions of realism (yes, I am beginning to sound full of myself, sorry) than this is exactly the sort of writing that Levine refuses to succumb to, and that is what makes her writing so great: not tired routine and sleepwork, but high heavenly art. Seriously, buy and read her books. NOW!

A Smart and Sensitive Look at Power and Oppression
By A Customer
On the surface, this book offers startlingly beautiful language and heart-stopping imagery. But its offerings merely begin there. Levine, a master of metaphor and tone, uses these 18 surreal parables to critique power dynamics and to expose the oppressive mechanisms of family, relationships, body and gender. Often simultaneously funny and disturbing, these stories will resonate years after a first reading. Her expert use of the surreal is often called Kafka-esque, an overused and misused literary cliche that, for once, fits the bill. Her keen grasp and expression of humanity's politics precisely suits Kafka's legacy while her expert use of language and imagery remind us that writing really is an art.

Her keen grasp and expression of humanity's politics precisely suits the Kafka legacy. Her expert use of language and imagery remind us that writing really is an art.

We need more books like this.
By Jason
I have read 9 books on Java programming and all of them have been good but they only provide explanations of certain areas. While reading BJ8D I felt like I had a teacher walk me through every detail. I think more books should be like this one in which it takes you through an example program from start to finish. He explained the steps and reinforced it by showing his desktop. I think for people like me that need to see the whole picture it is the perfect beginner book and not just for game programming. I whole heartily recommend this book.

A very good book, but start out very basic.
By Britt Pierce
When I bought this book I was looking for a book about Java 8 that I could have fun with and not get bored with reading through and end up only using it as a reference. So, when I saw this title I thought it would be a good learning tool and writing a game would keep me interested. For what I bought it for, I felt it did an excellent job.

This is absolutely a "beginner" book. The first four or five chapters are very, very basic. I can see the author is laying a foundation of basic knowledge but it is too basic. For example, entire chapters are written on how to download the various IDE's and applications you will need. IMO, telling me I need to download the latest version of Java 8 and NetBeans 8 should not take up three or four pages of text. It is that way for all of the various tools the author recommends. It also teaches the very basics of Java and Object Oriented programming...what a package is, what a class is, what a constructor is, what overloading and overriding methods mean, etc. I know this is a beginners book but it seems to assume you have never used Java, know nothing of OO programming, and don't know how to download software from the internet. IMO, it is too basic and contains a lot of stuff that almost all readers will skip.

However, when I read past (or mostly skimmed and skipped) those early chapters, this book does a very good job of breaking down how Java 8 handles graphics, sound, getting objects on screen, and various game related tasks (collision detection, animation and movement, etc). That is the main purpose of the book so it gets a big thumbs up for how it presents and teaches the fundamentals of JavaFX and how it can be used to create a game.

The layering of knowledge works well in the later chapters. The author never jumps right into coding but explains the goal and how the inner workings of Java 8 can reach that goal. You are not just told to define a sprite...but this is what the various graphic formats are (GIF, JSP, PNG, etc.), this is what we need to consider when we use a graphic, this is what I recommend, and now this is what you need to do in Java 8 to use that graphic. The same is done with audio, screen design, etc.

The result is you create a game with his example code but you finish the book with an in depth understanding of the code, and ALSO why certain choices were made and how to make the best choices when you make your own game.

So, I would highly recommend this book with the understanding that if you are not completely new to Java and Object Oriented programming that you may not get much out of the first few chapters.
