How to draw Manga - Short & Sweet

This is a beginners’ book. I never thought that drawing would be this easy before reading this book. I have learnt to draw different characters also (other than Manga) just by modifying here and there. I especially liked the “How to draw mouth & nose” chapter as it clearly portrays how to draw microexpressions for different emotions. As I am an ardent fan of learning and applying “Body Language” along with “Microexpressions”, this chapter really was a game-changer for me. My suggestion for anyone who reads this book would be - start reading this book with a pencil and a paper. Start drawing right from chapter one. Apply what you learn. Modify slightly and see how your character shapes up differently. It is really a thrill to create characters on your own.

My second favourite chapter is “How to draw male characters.” All these days, I used to try for umpteen times to sketch every super-hero as possible without success. The outlines, measurements and proportions taught in this book really blew me away. It made me realize how simple drawing really is. All that you need to learn are only the first few basic precautions which are taught lucidly and persuasively in this book. It would have been better if even more skeletal opening drawings were given. Would have been really great if step-by-step drawings were added to all the depicted figures. Hope an update to this ebook with more opening skeletal framework drawings is on the anvil.

Very helpful

My son has been trying to sketch manga characters, but didn't really have a good guide to help him. This book on how to draw manga provided him with the guidelines on proportions, style, shapes, and key features to make his artwork look like manga characters. The bonus chapter on Dragon Ball Z excited him so much that he is trying to perfect it. The written directions and visual examples are good for beginners like him.

Angelina did a good job on how to draw good manga. It’s not every time that one can find tutorial as good as this. The pictures used in the book are all exceptional and gives you clear idea on the written instructions. For anyone who wants to take this as his/her hobby then they must have this book. It’s the best that I have ever seen on this topic.

A Magnificent Saga of a Dark World

I just finished reading Tigana today and I must say that I loved it.
The first chapter starts very slowly. But I slogged through it, and by the time I was a few chapters in I was totally hooked. The story builds slowly, but it does build, and by the last chapter of the book I could hardly breathe because I was so eager to find out what happened.
The story is not predictable. I like complex stories like this that take lots of twists and turns, and contain significant surpises. I also like books like this that mostly deal with shades of grey instead of black and white, because they make you think. Often while reading Tigana I had to put the book down to think for a few moments if a character had been justified for doing something. I felt every bit as much sympathy for Brandin and Dianora, because their deplorable actions were done with love in mind, as I felt for Alessan and his group. This is like real life, where bad guys and good guys rarely exist.
Kay's writing contains a message of compassion for all people. But there was one character I really disliked and could feel no sympathy for: Alberico, not only because he killed so many innocent people gruesomely because he seemed to have no feelings at all, no soul, only a cold meaninless ambition. He didn't care about anything except his desire to be Emperor.
As well as the dark and pensive themes of the book, I enjoyed Kay's writing style as always. Although his poetic prose sometimes borders on melodrama he has the power to take my breath away. Rarely do I read a book and want to read certain lines over and over again because they're so beautiful.
The book is full of memorable scenes that are dripping with strong emotion. I felt everything along with the characters: the fear, the pain, the helplessness, the love and elation. I don't think I've ever read another author who conveys such depths of emotion as Kay.
If you like shocking surprises you'll like this book, because it contains quite a few. My jaw dropped open more than once!
All in all a great book that I'll always remember. Kay is a master of emotional, poignant writing that also makes you think. If you're willing to dedicate some time to this book (it's on the long side) as well as some mindpower (it's not something you can breeze through) then you won't be sorry.

One of the best fantasy stories.

I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction. Tigana is one of the best stories I've read. I think it is Guy Gavriel Kay's best work. (Much better than the Fionivar Tapestry.) Follow the struggle of the heroes of Tigana, a country defeated in war, as they try to liberate their homeland and exact retribution on its conqueror.

"Tigana" (1990) is what's usually defined, as a Fantasy book. Yet IMHO is more than that.
Guy Gavriel Kay (b. 1954, Canadian) has researched thoroughly Italy's historical & geographical background in order to give life to The Peninsula of the Palm he describes in a sort of "alternate universe", so similar and so different of our own world.

Guy Gavriel Kay is a character's goldsmith, and gives accurate and sensible picture of each of them. Not only the main ones but even the short-lived fleeing personas are treated with deepness and care.

Kay has a special knack to depict scenes that lead the reader to jump to conclusions that are, astonishingly, proved wrong a couple of pages later, this keep you reading on tiptoes, expecting new surprises... and they show up even if you are warned.

The story is about a land subject to two Tyrants that had split the Peninsula's realms in two and had been facing each other for the last twenty years trying to device some trick to unbalance and defeat the rival.
Meanwhile the subjugated people of the defeated kingdoms seem unable to rebel and resigned to suffer. However there is one kingdom worst treated of them all: after devastating all their cities, the Wizard Tyrant, has cast a spell over the land that forbids its name to be spoken & understand by anyone except the few survivors of Tigana.
A small band of people from Tigana and all the other realms start little by little a resistance movement combining very different abilities and interests to try to overthrow the Tyrants.
The book is the chronicle of their struggle.

The descriptions of cities, rural places, king's courts, taverns and markets have a distinctive flavor, without being boring. The different characters are fully human and interesting, not two dimensional stereotypes as may be expected in Fantasy story. The inner thoughts of most of them are shown, giving insight as to why they do what they do.

This is a book to be enjoyed by different kind of readers and they won't be disappointed at all!

The history Herge creates for his fictional Eastern European country is complex and fascinating, and a locked-room mystery and cross-country pursuit make for one of Tintin's more entertaining adventures. The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn is the first in the series of 3D motion capture films based on the iconic character created by Georges Remi, better known to the world by his pen name, Herge, and is due for release in 2011. The film stars Jamie Bell as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig as the nefarious Red Rackham. Bell and Craig are joined by an international cast that includes Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook.

The Adventures of Tintin (also known as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn[4] in the United Kingdom) is a 2011 American performance capture 3D film based on The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé (Georges Remi). Directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Peter Jackson, and written by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the film is based on three of the original comic books: The Crab with the Golden Claws (1941), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943), and Red Rackham's Treasure (1944).[5] Spielberg first acquired rights to produce a film based upon the Adventures of Tintin series following Hergé's death in 1983, and re-optioned them in 2002. Filming was due to begin in October 2008 for a 2010 release, but release was delayed to 2011 after Universal opted out of producing the film with Paramount, who provided $30 million on pre-production. Sony chose to co-produce the films. The delay resulted in Thomas Sangster, who had been cast as Tintin, departing from the project. Producer Peter Jackson, whose company Weta Digital is providing the computer animation, intends to direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film.[6] --Wikipedia

Herge (Georges Remi) was born in Brussels in 1907. Over the course of 54 years he completed 23 albums of The Adventures of Tintin series, which is now considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comics series of all time. With translations published in over 80 languages, more than 230 million copies sold worldwide and a Hollywood movie to its name, Tintin dominates the Comics and Graphic Novels chart even today. Sadly, Herge died in 1983, leaving his 24th album, Tintin and Alph-Art, unfinished, but his hero continues to be one of the most iconic characters in both adult and children's fiction.

Initial impression.

I've just started reading this book. I'm an emergency doctor trying to get an impression of family medicine in the US. I have the kindle edition. The first thing I've noticed is that although there are references in the text, like this (3), they aren't linked to anything and the reference list is absent from either the end of the chapter or the book. As always, Amazon does a dismal job of making a textbook into an ebook, somehow managing to combine the worst of both worlds.

this one is ok. it has good general info about very broad family medicine topics. it offers good information about preventative medicine which is important and most common diagnoses of family med such as diabetes, hypertension, male and female health, etc.. it does not offer specific information on topics that are more often seen on IMED. it may or may not be worth a buy depending on what other resources you are using.

Very helpful in creating a cheminformatic relational database

I would say the title of this book is quite accurate. It does not cover all the details of implementation, some is left up to the user, but it guides you in the "Design and Use" aspect quite well. It even contains free code along with authors own CHORD package (Based on a commercial product) that he can sell you or you can just use the code from the book which is quite extensive and written in Perl, Python, and C(based on the very useful open-source package Open Babel)that you can use in your postgresql database. While I had to also get a book on postgresql for the technical set up aspects, this book deals with relational database design and how to search and store chemical information in a meaningful way. I would say that it is expertly written, with every chapter useful, and not some books where there is a lot of junk chapters not needed.

One wish I would have liked to see is more on client side setup, and the ability to automatically interact more with the database, but these are things that could possibly come out in the second edition?

Convincing

Relational databases and the relational model are far from new concepts, having first appeared 40 years ago. When we think of where data lives, we usually think of it residing in a relational database of some sort. However, there are domains like chemical informatics where the uptake of these databases is uneven - there are still many cheminformatics scientists who have never written a line of SQL, and still rely on antiquated models of large dataset handling and storage - like flat files in a unix system.
This book aims to change that. From the first sentence of chapter 1: "The goal of this book is to convince you that relational databases are the best way to store, search, and even operate on chemical information." By the time I had finished reading this book, I was indeed convinced. From the fundamentals of relational databases, to SQL, to IT considerations like client/web applications and how to store, search, and manipulate data, O'Donnell moves on to cover how chemistry is actually represented in such databases and what you can do with it. To make this practical he discusses how to implement an actual chemistry Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) in PostgreSQL, a popular open-source RDBMS.
The book is a manageable size - 229 pages - which seems about right, of which 35 or so comprise 9 very helpful Appendices including lots of code snippets, which for me are the best way to learn. This is the kind of book I still keep out on my desk for reference to things like Table A.4 in the back. While this may seem too esoteric to some readers, it is to me an invaluable resource describing the SMARTS (a chemistry substructure specification language) implementation of one of the most popular sets of chemistry "keys" used in cheminformatics practice. Someone so inclined could learn much of the SMARTS language just by studying how these 166 keys are encoded by SMARTS strings. Readers will probably find numerous other things of this nature in the book that can be applied to their own work.
O'Donnell has made a valuable contribution to the domain of chemical informatics, and I hope he convinces others of the power of relational databases in chemistry.

much improvement needed

This is a book on storing and searching chemical structures in relational databases. It has two audiences: 1) scientists such as chemists/biologists/biochemists etc who need to work with modern IT tools like RDBMSs. These people probably do not have formal computer science training and 2) IT professionals like application developers, DB admins, DB programmers who need to provide support to, or develop for, laboratory scientists working with chemical structure data.

All in all, this is a strange book. And not in a good way. Let me explain why.

First, the book has a very "Open Source" feel with the author employing languages like Perl, Python, PHP, Java throughout and an open source DB I've never heard of - PostgreSQL. When you visit the author's website you can see why - he's obviously running his consulting company on this DB and has developed his own data cartridge (CHORD) for storing chemical structures. I've got no problem with anyone running their commercial venture as they see fit but when you write a book on chemical databases you should focus on the technologies the average user is likely to encounter. And that is not open source. This would be tools like Windows, Oracle and MS Visual Studio - VB, C#, C++ and a host of proprietary chemical software.

Second, the first six chapters on database design and related topics are unsuitable for both target audiences. Database design is a very large and important topic. It's difficult to convey all the required information in just 6 chapters covering 70 pages. This text is written at too a high a level for the scientific audience. They would need many other books and lots of hands-on experience to become proficient at design. Then these chapters would make sense. For experienced IT and DB professionals this material is trivial.

Third, there's no discussion at all of desktop chemical databases like ISIS/Base or ChemFinder. This is a significant omission IMHO.

Fourth, with a title like "Design and Use of Relational Databases in Chemistry" I was expecting a major discussion and critical comparison of the various commercial Oracle chemical database cartridges. After all, Oracle dominates the marketplace at places like Big Pharma and large chemical companies. How do these cartridges work? What are the features to look for when buying? What are pros and cons to using these products? How much do they cost (approx.)? How to develop software program using them, what do their code samples look like etc etc. None of that stuff is here.

Fifth, starting around chapter 8 or 9 this book goes off the deep end. It becomes far too technical. The only people interested in this material would be a select group of hardcore database programmers with a very good understanding of chemistry using a relatively uncommon DB called PostgreSQL. This book quickly turns into a work for the author to document the technical aspects of his database(s). Too narrow in scope.

Chapter 13 has useful info on how to construct a schema for chemicals and related experimental data. Chapters 5 and 12 may also be of some use to application developers. However, the coverage of client-side applications is kinda skimpy.
