Essential text on the foundations of computer music

This book is for anyone interested in using computers to extend the boundaries of music. The reader should already be familiar with computer programming and with music as this book treats these subjects together. It is assumed that the reader is musically literate at the level of being able to read and write common practice music notation. The author says that the reader should be familiar with mathematics at the level of high school trigonometry and algebra. However, I think that the reader should also be familiar with digital signal processing, as this book does not take too much time and space to introduce the subject and much of the book relies heavily on DSP concepts and structures.

After a brief introduction, chapter 2 of the book takes the reader on a wild ride through the world of digital audio, starting with simple representation of sound via sinusoids, through ADC and DAC issues, and concluding with a discussion of both IIR and FIR digital filters with some programming examples in C. Chapter 3 builds on the ideas in chapter 2 and shows the reader how to use digital filtering concepts to build structures that simulate musical instruments. The author also introduces his own programming environment for computer music, CMusic. Chapter 4 is all about spatial hearing, direction cues, echoes and reverberation, and the mathematical modeling of all of these phenomena. Chapter 5, "Composing", talks about algorithmic composition via random numbers, Markov processes, and noise. This is probably the chapter that depends the most on the reader having musical maturity. The appendices have a nice treatment of mathematics and of CMusic.

The ideas and algorithms discussed in this book are largely timeless, and that is why I still use my copy a great deal even 16 years after it was published. However, I will knock a single star off of my rating for the fact that the author's program, CMusic, is enshrouded in secrecy. The author will tell you how to use it, what functions are in it, etc. However, even now, the source code for it is not freely available. If you are working on a Windows platform the best you can do is find a monolithic .exe program that works best under DOS and can crash under Windows. And because I don't have access to the source code, I have no idea why this happens. If Mr. Moore had been a little more "open source" in his attitude towards CMusic, it might have caught on more than it ultimately did. Don't let this problem prevent you from buying the book, though. It is one of the best written books on computer music that I have ever read and it has many good ideas in it, and I do recommend it for anyone interested in computer music.

A book for technically oriented musicians!

The range of subjects it covers is vast and they are presented in a simple manner. It's a Classic!!!
That said, If I had to choose a single book on the subject, it wouldn't be this one. This is more of a complementary and introductory book to some principles to computer music. The information in it is outdated, and while most principles still apply, there are many more newer books that excel at explaining the many concepts.
As a complement to other books in the subject, I highly recommend it. It's a must have for anyone serious about computer music as it provides a great historical perspective to computer music.

Gives a good overview of the Procurement Cycle with concise explanations. Better suited for those new to Procurement and Supply Chain concepts than those working in the field or with a SCM background.

This book wasn't quite what I was looking for but would recommend it to someone who is trying to improve their general knowledge of Procurement either in the workplace or in academia.

What a great resource

I teach an advanced oral English class for professionals, in China. I am very impressed with the books in this series, and with this one in particular. I received Discussions That Work a couple of weeks ago and have gone through it cover to cover. I was amazed to find that I could imagine my class discussing almost every topic given, participating in almost every activity suggested. This book is full of wonderful ideas, clearly presented by the author and requiring little advance preparation by me. Ms. Ur is a master at her craft. Highly recommended!

In this highly innovative study, Ziony Zevit argues that this is not how ancient Israelites understood the early biblical text. Drawing on such diverse disciplines as biblical studies, geography, archaeology, mythology, anthropology, biology, poetics, law, linguistics, and literary theory, he clarifies the worldview of the ancient Israelite readers during the First Temple period and elucidates what the story likely meant in its original context.

Most provocatively, he contends that our ideas about original sin are based upon misconceptions originating in the Second Temple period under the influence of Hellenism. He shows how, for Ancient Israelites, the story was really about how humans achieved ethical discernment. He argues further that Adam was not made from dust and that Eve was not made from Adam’s rib.  His study unsettles much of what has been taken for granted about the story for more than two millennia and has far-reaching implications for both literary and theological interpreters.

Ziony Zevit is Distinguished Professor of Biblical Literature and Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures at the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. He is widely recognized for his publications in Hebrew epigraphy, biblical studies, and ancient Israelite religion.

A welcome addition to my bookshelf

This is a very well-written examination of the initial cultural context of the Eden story. Although this entails a close study of the Hebrew words, the book remains accessible to those with little to no knowledge of Hebrew. There's also plenty of interesting theories and accompanying compelling evidence that may surprise even those with decent knowledge of ancient near eastern culture and Semitic etymology. I found the explanation and re-interpretation of the word commonly read as "rib" to be particularly enlightening. Throughout it all, the text is straightforward and often quite amusing. If you're interested in biblical history or Israelite culture at all, I highly recommend this book.

First rate, and thorough

I have been "bedeviled" for decades by the traditional reading of original sin as stemming from the Garden. Professor Zevit, all in good time, addresses that reading, and in a thorough---and greatly entertaining---way, demolishes it. Much else about this famous section of Torah is also addressed, and again often in surprising ways. A great read, overall, by a first-rate scholar.

A superb, nuanced, and strikingly insightful exposition of a Biblical story (Adam & Eve) that we believe we all know so well that we don't even think about the assumptions underlying out beliefs. He balances, successfully, strictly linguistic analyses with broader views of the theological implications of his careful linguistic examinations. It's eye-opening, and appears well balanced between the interests of the scholar and the non-expert.

Nice and Unique Book for Beginning Hand Lettering

This is a good book for someone who is interested in getting started with hand lettering. The author focuses mainly on floral patterns, but the 'botanical' tag is not representative of everything that this book includes. The author also incorporates more block lettering, and the idea of positive and negative space. Also included are blank pages, as well as pages with borders, which the hand letterer (you) are encouraged to play in. I appreciated that the author encouraged constant and focused practice in order to get better, and overall the ideas and suggestions provided were good. My one hitch with this book, is that it may be a little short/basic for those who are really into hand -lettering, but it seems perfect for a beginner or someone interested specifically in plant or plant influenced designs.

My favorite part of the book was that it included space ...

I am a tiny bit obsessed with hand lettering, and this book basically made my lettering dreams come true. This book teaches you the basics of lettering, starting from the different types of letterings and continuing with botanical doodles that can decorate your writing. The book provides you with step by step instructions, but with plenty of room to bring your own creativity to your work. My favorite part of the book was that it included space to doodle and practice each step of the way. I can never get my script to look as pretty as I’d like, but this book provides guides to make things look as beautiful as I’d dreamed. This book is wonderful. I can’t recommend it enough- it is SUCH a great book.

Got my creative juices going!

I’ve taken a calligraphy class in the past and it’s very technical. My instructor was a perfectionist. She wanted every letter to be perfect. I love this book because it’s free form calligraphy with embellishments. I copied a couple of the designs and got my confidence up and started expanding on her designs and then started creating my own designs. This book is a great way to get your creative juices going. What a great personalized gift if you had the time to create a weekly planner, calendar or note cards. Though it’s not in color, I can only imagine how the author would do it. The next step for me is color.

It's like a 20 year old male who reads Men's Health and has to dedicate his life to living the "healthy way" by forgoing life itself.

Nice read, good perspective, but a bit incomplete.

I really enjoyed this book and all of the potential it had. It brought up a lot of interesting thoughts and perspectives that had me evaluating my own role working with brands. There were some nice case studies and vignettes, while some others that just seemed to drop off without making a complete point. Also the definition of "unbrandables" seemed contradictory at times. I would consider Stüssy a text book example of a strong brand—authentic—but a very successful brand in any traditional ways.

I was a little disappointed, given that there was a lot of writing in it. I wanted to use it to learn ICD-10, but there are so many pages where questions are already answered, it's not possible....it is just a reference now. The price was great the delivery time was great.
