*Starred Review* The second of the projected 10 volumes of the Malazan Book of the Fallen raises the stakes set by Gardens of the Moon [BKL My 15 04]. From the Holy Desert Raraku, in the land of the Seven Cities, the seer Sha'ik sends her followers out on a holy war known as the Whirlwind. It bears more than a passing resemblance to the current violent Islamic jihad, but Erikson's scholarship is sufficiently thorough to enable him to avoid simpleminded likeness making. His imagination is also sufficient to bring the setting of the Seven Cities vividly to life, although his realism is rather literally gritty, including a great deal of sand and gravel that will inevitably recall for some readers a country in which American troops are now fighting. The opposition to the Whirlwind is varied but includes the inevitable mercenaries, limned in the manner that stems from David Drake's sf and in fantasy is practiced particular skillfully by Glen Cook. Erikson is making his dark characters and grisly battles very much his own, however, and fantasy readers with a strong appetite for world building and action ought to enjoy his efforts. Whether they'll stay for all 10 volumes is another matter, but so far, so good. Roland Green

... most people would think gee that must be a fun filled snore-fest

If I said to you an archaeologist and anthropologist wrote a set of books most people would think gee that must be a fun filled snore-fest. Yet it’s what makes Erikson so great.

He starts with the land. What are the characteristics of the land? How did it shape the people, the civilization, and the wildlife. Then he goes deeper. What is the spirit of the land? What lies under the land in past civilizations? How did they change the land? Are their spirits chained to the land? What magic runs through it? I believe given his education everything starts the surface layer and then every and any detail going up, down, left, right and in spiritual or magical directions we cannot see are all factored in and meshed together in astonishing detail where what seems like unrelated all becomes interconnected.

Then he takes the human element into account in the same multilayered fashion. No character is without fault. Every character is bound by motivation. They have failing, triumphs, tragedies, hopes, moments of despair. The push and pull of luck, gods, magic and everything else in the universe guiding them to where they never thought to be.

And that’s without talking about the brilliant prose he uses in describing this incredible world.
When you blend all that together it redefines the term epic. Perhaps the best book I’ve ever read. Better still………I’ve only finished book two!

Expect a lot of the same great writing from the first book with a new cast ...

The second book in the series takes us to a different continent of the Seven Cities. There are only a few recurring characters in this book as it takes place concurrently with book 3 of the series but in a different geographic location. Expect a lot of the same great writing from the first book with a new cast of characters that suck you in all over again. While I prefer a lot of the characters from the first book over this one, I felt that the story pacing and development of the world/characters was vastly improved in the second book. While you are confused by characters stances in the first book until nearing the end, you feel like you understand each character much earlier on. I absolutely loved Coltaine's character and we even get to see the famed Icarium mentioned briefly in passing in book one through his companion.

Towards the end of book two however you don't yet see the overarching storyline, this issue is fixed in book three and you start to see the overarching narrative there. If you made it through book one, this book won't disappoint. I would say its a definite step up in writing and I haven't been excited to read through a series like this in a long while.

Erikson writes beautifully. This is a complex series with scores of important characters popping in and out throughout the narrative. I have difficulty knowing who's who from time to time, but the skillful and descriptive writing makes it all worthwhile.

About the Author
Mike Caveney is a writer, collector, professional magician, and the publisher of over 50 books on the theory, practice, and history of magic. His biographical works include Kellar’s Wonders (2003) with Bill Miesel, and Carter the Great (1995). An avid collector and performer for over four decades, he has appeared onstage or on TV in more than 20 countries.

Jim Steinmeyer is the author of many books on magic history and practice, including Los Angeles Times bestseller Hiding the Elephant (2004) and The Glorious Deception (2006). He has created deceptions featured by magicians such as Doug Henning, David Copperfield, and Siegfried and Roy, and critically acclaimed illusions for Broadway hits Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and Into the Woods.

Ricky Jay, who has contributed the introduction to this book, is one of the world's great sleight of hand artists, and a distinguished actor, historian, and best-selling author. His Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women and Jay’s Journal of Anomalies were both New York Times "Notable Books of the Year," and he defined the terms of his art for The Cambridge Guide to American Theatre and Encyclopedia Britannica.

Gorgeous art book

Beautiful art book containing wonderful poster images and history of magic.
Just to clarify some of the differences between this and the earlier book:
1. The original book had 650 pages, this edition has 544.
2. This book is also in 3 languages (English, French and German).

It still weighs around 14lbs. and is a large format art book. (Page height is nearly 15.5 inches). It's gorgeous, fairly heavy, and I'm happy to have it! Honestly, if I hadn't read about the earlier version of the book I would never guess this was "scaled down". It's still a very impressive book!

UPDATE: Re the differences between this and the larger edition, the following is from the editor of the book, Noel Daniel:

"The smaller version is meant to offer readers the chance to discover the wonderful world of magic for a great price. To be able to offer a smaller version of the first edition (the larger book) at a trade price, we did need to reduce its physical size, which meant also reducing its page count and therefore the image count. Even though the smaller version is reduced by ca. 150 images of the original 900, it is still a fantastic, illustrated overview of 500 years of magic. This material has never been brought together in this manner before, and much of it has never been published. I spent many, many months personally visiting archives and incredible private collections to select these images from the original 30,000 that I gathered. Both the large and smaller versions are important publishing events in the history of magic.

In terms of the images that I cut from the original larger size, of course, it was very hard, as all of the images mean a great deal to me. However, I tried to retain critical images that I felt readers would like to see, while cutting images that perhaps were repeated in some aspect or contained information that could be found in other images."

The real magic here is the $40 price tag

If magic is your passion this book will knock your socks off. Lots of bang for the buck here. This is a huge book, choc-full of wonderful, vintage posters and photos. The posters and advertising pieces are all presented in a super-sized format and all in brilliant color. Five hundred and forty-four pages, that's less than a penny a page. At forty bucks you could buy an extra copy to decorate a family room or office. The book is very attractively bound and comes in a sturdy, decorative slipcase and an eye-catching dust jacket (as shown). I must confess, I am not a magic aficionado. I am as fascinated as the next guy at seeing a lady cut in half and put back together or miles of colorful silk scarves appear out of a pants' pocket - but that's not what attracted me to this book. I collect advertising and graphic art and thought this would be a nice addition to my collection. I was not disappointed. Not every image is museum worthy but the few that aren't are the exception. The material on Houdini is particularly interesting and quite extensive. It will take me a while to finish reading this behemoth as the pictures are quite a distraction, but that's not a bad thing. I scratch my head every time I see one of these Taschen mega-books. How do they produce such quality at the prices they do?

Amazon held up shipment on this book for a while and I am not exactly sure why. My copy was not as tightly bound as some books I own in this oversize format but it otherwise seemed just fine. A previous comment suggested there was some missing material from this new edition (150 images out the original 900). I never saw the earlier edition and frankly, at my age, another 150 pages would render this book unliftable. I also happen to live right on top of the San Andreas Fault and am not real anxious to risk upsetting a very delicate equilibrium.

I don't know how many copies they printed of this book but I wouldn't waste too much time. If your waiting for a better deal - it ain't happening. (just my opinion)

If you've been thinking about getting this wonderful visual history of magic and couldn't afford the original $300 coffee table book, this every bit as good. Slightly smaller and roughly 75 pages shorter (mostly redundant images have been edited out), this is a stunning compendium that will still look great on your table or book case for under $50. With free shipping, this is a bargain!

Taking the class with Soldworks 2015-2016. All the information is current enough. The book spells everything out pretty well if you are doing it on your own, with the only exception is the order in which tools and topics are brought up is kind of out of order. If you get stuck look multiple chapters ahead to find the answer.

Quick, Fun Read

I am loving how this series is progressing and Eme Strife is keeping me enticed and I'm wanting more, more, more!

Ramona aka Roni and Dr Frost are in a one on one doctor-patient encounter that gets very interesting for Roni and I love how Eme wrote this in the story. It makes me wonder how the future will play out for these two characters. I'm not going to spoil anything for those who haven't read it but if you're reading this, you may want to check these out, they are quick, fun reads.

Roni is facing some rough stuff and Eme has left me hanging again so I'll be watching patiently and a little impatiently for #7, but I know it'll be worth the wait!

Wonderfully written! I was not expecting it to end so abruptly but I should know by know how Eme loves to keep us guessing and wanting more. She picks the perfect places to leave us hanging and I feel like Ramona is a close friend of mine now because I’ve been able to get to know her over these volumes and I am struggling along with her. Again wonderful writer and I am excited to be along for the ride with her.

Eme Strife's Doctor-Patient Confidentiality Volume #6 finally gets steamy, at least more so than the previous volumes...A majority of this novella focuses on an uncomfortable, yet necessary interaction between Roni Gallo and Dr. Dexter Frost. She is a vulnerable and emotional mess, he remains stern, composed and in control at all times. The contract that looms, her medical status unknown with felt loneliness and desperation. Roni, too independent to seek the support of her best friend, goes this one alone, frightened of what her future holds. The reader is left with yet another climax with more questions than answers.

I am beginning to wonder how many subsequent volumes this is going to take to wrap up the drama that surrounds Roni Gallo. Although an interesting story, it is beginning to drag and lose some of my interest as a result. I am growing weary of having to move onto the next volume, which are mere chapters in length. A firm note of criticism is the overuse of the word "incredulous", I am certain the author can arrive at a more expanded vocabulary... There is good writing within these novellas, however, there is plenty of room for more refined, mature and focused writing. Rated 3/5

The Heart of a Frustrated Woman

In most societies in this world, it is a positive to be born a man. Being born a man will automatically give a person more chances in life than being a woman. 'Memoirs of a Woman Doctor' is the story of an Egyptian girl planning to become a doctor. She lives in a society where a woman's chances of climbing the socio-economic ladder are slim to none. Being the only woman in her medical school, she constantly tries to denegrate men and sometimes scolds humanity in general. She feels men are not the "Gods" that her mother thought they were. She tries to rationalize humanity, saying they are no better than animals. In all this time, she seems to have no attachment to humanity; all she seems to care about are her studies and her career. The ending of the book can be interperted in two ways. Some will feel it is a cop out (like I did) and others will feel she learned a very important lesson about this life. Nonetheless, it is a facinating read into the heart and mind of a smart, but frustrated woman living in a socitey dominated my males.

I was a bit nervous purchasing a used book. I went that route once before from a different site and was disappointed. I can say I was pleasantly surprised! The Longman Anthology of Women's Literature book I received was gently used with no marks or highlighting on the inside. All pages in very good condition and the book was free of mildew or smoke smell. I will not hesitate to buy from this seller again. Thank you!

One of the books I kept after College

I purchased this book for a Women's Lit Undergraduate College Course. We didn't read the whole thing, but the majority of it. Filled with classics that are referenced to everyday. Enjoyed learning more about the authors in the bio sections in addition to reading their writings. It worked really well for the class. I would recommend.

A Great Compilation of Writings

This is a very nice introduction to various female authors. I enjoyed reading stories by those I knew and becoming acquainted with those I didn't. Some have quickly become favorites.
