In Building Codes, Catharine Randall contends that all Calvinist architecture recalls a scriptural intertext, and seeks to build upon the firm foundations of the Gospel. These architects, instructed to erect monuments glorifying Catholic patrons, inscribe the tension between their confessional perspective and their commission upon their structures. Randall explores the ways in which structures such as Chambord, Chenonceau, the Luxembourg Palace, and the Louvre bear encoded criticisms of religious and political authority.

By examining the lives of several famous architects of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, along with blueprints, engravings, actual structures, garden layouts, builders' manuals, and illustrated allegories, this study excavates the Calvinist faith of these architects and demonstrates the dramatic effects their embattled religious perspective had on the structures they built.

I am taking a Educational Measurement class this semester and so far I have found this textbook to be a thorough and relevent guide to the class that I am in.

This book was purchased for a summer class. The book was well organized and seemed to fit the purpose pretty well. My favorite thing is the indepth summaries at the end of the chapters. This provided a good way for the students to focus on the important information.

Good book to have

This is a good book. I was required to buy it for a educational measurement class and found this book to be very helpful. I reference this book throughout the year when I am teaching. This books gives you guidelines on how to write questions (i.e. multiple choice, matching, fill in the black questions, etc). The authors also teach you the calculations to determine if a test question you have created was reasonable or too easy or too difficult. I bought this book last summer, 2012, and have been using it since then.

It's OK

I'm a huge fan of Kathy's. I think her stand-up is hilarious. She has some priceless bits, like her recollection of Brooke Shield's wedding. I stayed up all night reading this book.

Some of her revelations are entertaining and juicy, like how Tupac couldn't read, and John Hamm is a drunken lout. The biggest thing I didn't like is her celebrity worship. She gushes like a crazed fan about certain celebs as if she doesn't realize she's "one of them." She's surprised when a celeb recognizes her, but they'd have to be living under a rock to not know who she is. She's been on TV for decades, and she's known for skewering celebs. They all have to be aware of her, out of fear, if nothing else.

Kathy Griffin's Celebrity Run-Ins: My A-Z Index by Kathy Griffin is a fun read which many readers will enjoy. The book is about the “run-ins” that the comedian, actress, author and Grammy winner experienced first-hand, and you can safely vouch for its veracity. As the book’s title suggests, it is indexed painstakingly and methodically, and you have the option to pick and choose and select the entries in the book. Else, like reading any other normal book, you can start from the beginning and read it through to the end.

If you love or hate Kathy Griffin either as a person or entertainer or even writer, you’ll surely love this book which deals mostly with the relationships she had with other celebrities. Or if it can’t be called a relationship, at least it is her views about others, which may be a much more appropriate description. In the book, she talks about a lot of people ranging from Warren Beatty to Woody Allen to Barbra Streisand to Demi Lovato to Leonardo DiCaprio to Donald Trump, and to Ellen DeGeneres just to name a few. The idea behind this book is sound: form bonds of love within your family by making traditions a greater part of your life. If we were just starting out raising our children, it would have been a very helpful and insightful book. The reality of it is, we have been doing this for years.

This is a stunning, path-breaking work. Harrison, it seems, has done the work of three historians at once. The historical issue is rendered with utmost clarity: East German leader Walter Ulbricht, in an effort to protect his own regime, effectively goaded the mercurial Khrushchev into a tougher policy vis-à-vis the West over Berlin. The book's real accomplishment is to recreate the élan of the time. This is an unusual gift which can sometimes strike with academic historians. The reader may rest assured that Harrison has got the gift. Nowadays, the politically-correct view of the Cold War is that it was a figment of America's reactionary imagination. Harrison doesn't bother to, doesn't need to, refute this idea. She merely does what the historian does best. And then, quite suddenly, you are in the midst of the events themselves. It's a trip well worth taking.

Better in the hard copy, but worth it even for the Kindle Version

This a very good Russian Grammar resource that I got for free in hard copy and then purchased in the Kindle version when the other one was "decorated" by one of my cats. While the Kindle version has a few printing errors (certain stressed Russian letters appear in a larger font then the rest of the letters in the word and there are (very few) typos), it is still worth the buy for the portability and I would recommend it if you intend to study it from start to finish. If, however, you need it as a reference book to pick up and look something up at random, the hard copy is a better choice since the Kindle, by its very nature, is harder to navigate (it does have a searchable Table of Contents which is a nice feature, but not a searchable index for specific words/ideas which would be great technology to have). In either format I highly recommend it.

An excellent Russian Grammar, but a disappointing Kindle version.

If I was just judging the content of the original work I would have given it an unconditional 5 stars but, once again, it seems the Kindle version is an inferior product because of the number of typos and transposed letters in the Russian text. In fact, I have not purchased a single book from Kindle that does not have typos, but this one is particularly annoying because a) it cost over $30, and b) for those learning a foreign language, it is rather important that the words you are trying to learn are spelled correctly! Also, certain Russian characters appear very tiny compared to others and are barely legible on the Paperwhite. Why is there so much less quality control for Kindle products than works printed on paper? I really don't understand this. Finally, could Amazon please develop a Russian dictionary for the Kindle so that students of Russian, like myself, can download Russian-language texts and look up words as we are going along?

Great Reference

This book is a must have for learning Russian grammar. It is very thorough with lots of examples. Each example in Russian has a full English translation. Every part of speech gets its own chapter that explains its usage in detail. There is also a workbook that accompanies the grammar book. Like most texts written for English speakers learning Russian, this text is written in British English. I had to Google some things like "gawper." Some grammatical rules are different between American and British English. As long as you don't mind that, this book is great. A must have for anyone learning Russian.
