Concise and very useful.

I purchased the book earlier this week, and it arrived yesterday. First order of business was to extract the CD that came with the book, and check out the exercises. In the CD sleeve there is a paper with access and activation codes. After installing the software on the CD, I clicked on the “Exercises” tab and was provided about 40 performance-based exercises, which consisted of drag and drop, command line (such as, “use the command to verify connectivity to address 172.16.178.2”), and more.

The book begins with the flashcards themselves, organized into chapters. The cool part was that I could look at the each of the flashcards on the right hand side of the page (3 cards per page), and easily turn the page to see the back side (and the answer) to each or all of the flash cards on the back of that page. I think having them all in a book is convenient, as I won’t lose any that way. It should also make it easier to go to a specific chapter, as they are organized by chapter.

After the flashcard section, the book (on page 254) begins a very concise “reader’s digest” summary of the topics for each of the chapters. I have taken the CompTIA Network+ N10-006 exam, and the summaries are on point!

I haven’t yet looked at the hundreds of sample questions that comes as part of the digital offering with this book, but I imagine that they are as good as the content I have seen so far, which is excellent.

Then, the author explores several scenarios that would benefit from network segmentation. He then describes how to test the upgrade, update, or patch in a text environment before rolling it out to production. Next, the author examines several features that are used with Layer 2 switches. He continues by examining several concepts as they relate to wireless local area networks. Then, the author looks at why it is important to maintain network security.
He then covers how security controls can be implemented and configurations made to improve the security posture for network devices and hosts that connect to those networks. The author also examines troubleshooting methodologies as presented in the CompTIA Network+ blueprint. He continues by examining several tools that can be used from the command-line interface of network devices; as well as, physical and software-based troubleshooting tools. Then, the author addresses several issues that could impact network connectivity for network devices that are using wireless; as well as, physical cabling, such as unshielded twisted pair that uses copper. He then presents several troubleshooting areas that can occur on networks today. Finally, the author addresses many of the networking standards and theories that are used in computer network; as well as, the ports employed by many common applications.

The CD that accompanies this excellent book is also very valuable. It is critical that you study with the resources contained in this great book before you take the exam.

New definition of "Flash Cards"

I haven't had a chance to dig through it yet, but at first glance, it loses two stars right away. It says "Flash Cards". There are several pages (about 220) in the book, in standard paperback stock, that can be cut out to be used like flashcards. This would physically destroy the book, and they are not cards at all, so they will get destroyed themselves easily.

At least the ones on the disk, should be portable, with my phone... I look forward to trying them.

Now approaching middle age, and more influential than ever, Korine remains intentionally sensationalistic and ceaselessly creative.

He parlayed the success of Kids into directing the dreamy portrait of neglect, Gummo, two years later. With his audacious 1999 digital video drama Julien Donkey-Boy, Korine continued to demonstrate a penchant for fusing experimental, subversive interests with lyrical narrative techniques. Surviving an early career burnout, he resurfaced with a trifecta of insightful works that built on his earlier aesthetic leanings: a surprisingly delicate rumination on identity (Mister Lonely), a gritty quasi-diary film (Trash Humpers), and a blistering portrait of American hedonism (Spring Breakers), which yielded significant commercial success. Throughout his career he has also continued as a mixed-media artist whose fields included music videos, paintings, photography, publishing, songwriting, and performance art.

An Excellent Companion to a Fascinating Body of Work

This book traces Harmony Korine's career from his groundbreaking screenplay for Kids up to his first mainstream success (as a director) with Spring Breakers. The films that are covered in detail are:

Kids, Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Fight Harm (Unreleased and Unfinished), Mister Lonely, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers.

What emerges from these interviews is a portrait of a filmmaker who is aesthetically ambitious, keenly aware of his influences, surprisingly articulate about his own work, and deeply immersed in cinematic history. As he says himself, the films are expressions of how he was feeling at a given moment, and this book does an excellent job of showing how his films, cinematic obsessions, and biography intersect.

Korine's life has been a complete roller coaster, from the extremely early success of Kids, to the controversial Gummo, to his unravelling through Julien Donkey-Boy and his eventual rebirth with Mister Lonely. The interviews go deep into his process and inspirations (including carnivals and vaudeville) for more nonlinear films like Gummo, Julien Donkey Boy, and Trash Humpers. For Spring Breakers, his use of electronic music to provide a structure for the film's story is also fascinating.

Simply put, this is an excellent companion to the life and work of one of America's most original filmmakers.

About the Author

Frank M. Carrano is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Rhode Island. He received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates.

Required Textbook for College

Though I bought this textbook for a a Java class, I haven't found a whole lot of use in it as I can just Google whatever I might need (for example the entire API library of java.AWT.) However, this text explains concepts and theory very well. I ended up buying the book instead of renting it and I believe it was a good decision. Whenever I'm doing a major programming assignment, I have this with me and open to the chapter for easy access. There's something encouraging about having a physical copy of a programming text in front of you.The book also comes with an access code, assuming it hasn't been scratched off, with great online video notes. Activate it through MyMathLab and not the way they tell you to. Good book. It's helping me pick up Java in a matter of months.

Its a text book what do you expect.

Shipping was on time. The book its self is okay the video notes that come with it are excellent.
If there is a way I suggest just the video notes done by the author.
