No other biography comes closer to the subject

As a devoted reader of history, especially of the early 20th century period, I probably have gone through every popular and even arcane book on Hitler and National Socialism. I've read Albert Speer's "Inside the Third Reich," Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reach," Alan Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives," . . . yet, these books, while informative, lack the depth of understanding of the horrible phenomenon of Hitler that Joachim Fest brings to his biography. Maybe because Fest himself is German and is therefore closer to his subject. Yes, the style is dry, and the book is indeed rather biased at times--the preface is titled incredibly "Hitler and Historical Greatness!" Yet, within that preface, you will find insights and observations that are lacking in all other biographies on the Fuehrer. I myself was riveted from page one all the way to the end. So, if you want to really understand Hitler, read this book. If you want to read a lighter biography, read the sections on Hitler in Bullock's "Hitler and Stalin: Parallel Lives."

As much a biography of Germany as of Hitler

I'm a big fan of biographies, and this remains (some 10 years after reading it) one of my favorites. There is no dearth of books on Hitler, of course. Fest's accomplishment here is that each section on Hitler is straddled by a section describing other events in the world and Germany, always giving the reader a larger context in which Hitler's activities can be placed.
I'm a little dismayed by [people] who suggest that Hitler was merely a sufferer of post-traumatic-stress syndrome after his experience in the trenches of WWI, and that Fest does a disservice (to Hitler?) by leaving this information out. But many people have suffered in the trenches in many wars without later moving on to attempt world domination and genocide.
In any case, Fest's biography omits nothing. It is written in a clear, beautiful language, and will leave you with an entirely new understanding of Hitler, Germans and Germany.

the ultimate biography

Joachim Fest's book "Hitler" is a rare pleasure to read. His words create an atmosphere and a world that we can understand. Fest manages to step into the shoes of Hitler -- we sit and day-dream with that man and build castles in the air. More than that, he manages to bare Hitler's mind and soul to the reader. We learn how and why Hitler acted as he did. His actions that are so vile that we absolutely condemn them, suddenly become clearer. We begin to understand and are warned of the power that one single man can usurp, even though he is penniles, without education and friends. Fest does in no way justify Hitler or his tyranny. On the contrary, he does open our eyes so that we see how actions of such brutality are possible. He makes us understand that they can happen again, but also how they can be avoided. It is an in-depth study of a strongman--strongmen by the way come in all sizes; we encounter them in our daily lives. Since Hitler's demise, half a dozen countries have suffered strongmen as heads of state, and it is vital that we understand and recognize a tyrant before it is too late. None better to learn from than Fest's Hitler, one of the shrewdest and most ruthless strongman of them all.

very helpful guide

i enjoy this guide and refer to it often before
i make a trip to the beer super stores. With the higher pricing of some of the craft beers,
it's good to know in advance if the beer might be something my husband and I might enjoy. This book has opened me up to trying many great beers from around the globe, and across the US.
Of course the book is not the end all of craft beer, with so many new beers being brewed, but for the price I highly recomend this book for it's attention to detail, and excellent photos.

Celebration of the primordial liquid gold

Being one of the world's oldest beverages, beer was known to Egyptians and Mesopotamians, even written about by ancient Sumerians and still enjoyed to this day, the constant way of reinventing and flavor and introducing new brands can be overwhelming but not with this easy to read guide.

Sometimes there's more to beer than meets the eye. Like tea it's more of a simple, easy and relaxing beverage that lacks the arrogance of coffee and hard liquors and the overly sweetness of cocoa and some wines. Even thought I like all the above beer is still an incredible invention, it's perfect for a weekend afternoon or chilled one or two for dinner when I just don't feel like cooking. I really do drink it because it like everything about it, not to get tipsy and forget everything, people tend to look down on it for some reason, but beer deserves some love and appreciation. Apparently one beer a day is good for the circulation, the hard part is having just one!

This book is more of a large pocket manual, but too thick to fit into any pocket, with each beer in alphabetical order taking places on each page, showing beautiful photos of the bottle, the proper glassware for serving and all sorts of flavor and history information. I can count on this to inform, entertain and show me beers that I will probably never tastes or find but at least I know to be on the lookout! I tend to like lighter beers, and the Asian ones always seem to tickle my fancy, currently Tiger beer just has my heart, and its extremely simple and non fussy I even love the name, which represents my favorite animal. Fruit flavored beers are also fun, but when I feel like something sweet. Currently having discovered great strawberry ale I am in search of new and untested brews.

This is a fun, sort of a mini encyclopedia for anyone who's a fan of the beverage and fan of history and the way different countries can interpret hops, malted barley, wheat, corn or even rice into their own distinct beverages. So yeah you have to do a few more crunches but beer is worth it.

When I first read the synopsis on this book, I thought to myself..oooweee this is right up my alley. Sure enough Harmony did NOT disappoint. It had everything I love in a book, drama, love, motorcycles, yummy men, and hot hot S E X. I love a good "claiming" session ;). I do have to say..it was a little more tame then I expected to be. I was thinking hard drugs, boozy parties etc etc, but like I said it did not disappoint.

We have Harmony an outspoken, tough, lovable, musically talented club girl. A "Club Girl" in case some of you are not familiar with MC club logistics is a girl who "entertains" these club members..basically shes a club whore/hoe/slut for all intensive purposes. Harmony is a bit different from the other club girls, she's respected and cherished almost by the members of the Brothers by Blood MC. She's the perfect club girl in their eyes, respectful, non-clingy, not full of drama, and not out to trap a brother for that Old Lady title. Shes used to men coming in and out of her life so shes not really looking for love here.

Then we have Kit, the new President for a near by chapter of the Brothers by Blood MC. He's the newly appointed president, who is well respected and followed by his fellow brothers. He sees Harmony and sees old lady material. More specifically HIS old lady material.

Without giving out too much Harmony and her bestie Chelsea are thrown into some drama by an outsiders. Her local club prez Optimus and Mr. Hottie McNewPrez Kit come in and figure out ways to keep the girls safe. There's betrayal, trust issues, kidnapping, rescue missions, death, sadness, music and sex sex sex...everything a great MC book needs. OH! One warning..there is a CLIFFHANGER in the book (rawrrrr)...but it doesn't involve Harm...so no worries! ;)

I give this book 5

I can not wait till the next book in the series come out!!

With the tense changes, grammatical errors, and typos I just couldn't finish it. It seems like it was written in one go and then not edited, which is unfortunate because I enjoyed the story. The sex scenes are really hot too! if you can get past the poor writing and ignore blaring errors then go ahead and give this book a read, even if it's just for the sex.

This book is good.

This book is good. The plot is good. The characters are good. The sex is good. This book is good and that is the problem. It somehow, in a way I have trouble putting my finger on, just falls short of being great. There really isn't anything I particularly dislike but it lacks a special spark for me. I think this is the perfect book to read if you only have small increments to read. This will keep you entertained but not tempt you to put off your work or stay up too late to keep reading. I think I am going to pass on the next.
