Nic and Katherine Love started Backyard Hibachi after many hours spent enjoying and entertaining on their own grill, the original BYH model. Since then, the grill has undergone a metamorphosis into the heirloom quality culinary art-piece it is today. The Love family owns and operates Backyard Hibachi in Lafayette, Louisiana and loves spending time outdoors, creating new recipes and tricks on their own hibachi grill for family and friends to enjoy and are proud to be bringing other families together by sharing their grills and recipes with others.

Do not waste your money on this book

Do not waste your money on this book. It is wildly overpriced for what is essentially a magazine (and a bad magazine, at that). The recipes are laughably simplistic - teriyaki chicken calls for chicken, onions, peppers, and Kikkoman Teriyaki sauce. That's it. I would love to say that this is the only recipe like that, but there are several similar recipes. The authors, Amazon, and anyone else profiting from this book should be blushing.

CARY COOPER is Distinguished Professor of Organizational Psychology and Health and Pro Vice Chancellor at Lancaster University, England. He was Founding Editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Editor of the journal Stress and Health, President of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and Chair of the think tank The Sunningdale Institute in the UK's National School of Government. He has a number of Honorary Doctorates from universities and received an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. Professor Cooper was honoured with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2001, and was elected as Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2009.

Thorough treatment of employee morale

I read this book in preparation for an advanced workshop on employee engagement and felt it provided excellent groundwork for this and related topics. David Bowles has the combined precision of an academic and facile mind of a practitioner which makes his material both accessible and relevant to the workplace. You can read this book front to back, or like me, dive in anywhere and find excellent material in a well-framed context.

I especially liked the author's use of his experience and authenticity in presenting concepts from the field. He sorts out ideas that (in my opinion) have not been given enough scrutiny. This is an intelligent read and facilitates deeper reflection on how we link people factors to organization success.

Beyond "touchy-feely HR"

Having worked in this area for many years, I was thrilled to find this book. Much of the work of HR has been dismissed as being touchy-feely or positioned as unnecessary costs to an organization. Bowles and Cooper summarize an impressive collection of research that supports the assertion that morale is a proven DRIVER of organizational performance, both in the public and private sector, positively affecting customer satisfaction, financial results and even worker health. This book should convince even the biggest doubters. And, it's a great tool for HR to use to help gain buy-in from their leadership regarding the importance of elevating employee morale, particularly in the aftermath of the "Great Recession."

Brian De Palma (b. 1940) isn't your average Hollywood director.

For years he reigned as the "master of the macabre," the man who massacred the class of '76 in Carrie and stalked Angie Dickinson in Dressed to Kill. By the mid-1980s De Palma found himself assaulting his audience and critics, daring them to watch a chainsaw enter a man's skull in Scarface and a power drill disembowel a defenseless woman in Body Double.

What drove De Palma to such extremes? In the late 1960s, he wanted to be the next Jean-Luc Godard and revolutionize American cinema. Instead, he found himself ostracized when Warner Bros. removed him from Get to Know Your Rabbit, his first Hollywood feature. De Palma sought the refuge of Alfred Hitchcock until the late 1970s (Sisters, Obsession), when his surreal approach to horror became a genre unto itself (Carrie, The Fury, Dressed to Kill). Ironically, just as De Palma achieved the success that his fellow Movie Brats George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg had enjoyed since the mid-1970s, he could not hide his resentment toward Hollywood. After battling with the MPAA in the 1980s, he gradually became part of the mainstream with the success of The Untouchables and Mission: Impossible, although he never suppressed his desire to make audiences aware of his camera-eye and his dark, penetrating worldview.

Brian De Palma: Interviews follows De Palma's fortunes as he makes the difficult transition from underground filmmaker to celebrity auteur. In profiles and q&a interviews, he emerges as a fascinating figure of excess and ambivalence. De Palma is not afraid to share his opinions about censorship, violence, feminism, American culture, and the fate of cinema in the twenty-first century.

Although he will probably forever be most closely associated with the horror movies Carrie and The Fury, which put him on Hollywood's map, DePalma started out as a Godard-wanna-be in Greetings and Hi Mom, low-budget, politically conscious films starring a young Robert DeNiro, and has since directed everything from by-the-numbers blockbusters (Mission: Impossible) to bloated gangster flicks (Scarface, The Untouchables). Despite his eclecticism, he remains tainted by his reputation for violent misogyny (he cast his then-wife, Nancy Allen, as a prostitute in three consecutive films), the blatant Hitchcock rip-offs that characterized his early work, and the notorious megaflop Bonfire of the Vanities, which derailed his career in the early '90s. These 19 interviews, drawn from major publications such as the New York Times and Esquire, specialty film publications, and even Web sites, don't shy away from the controversies surrounding DePalma's work. By turns evasive and confessional, the director voices his bitterness about Hollywood despite the fact that he has played the system cannily, making commercial blockbusters to get the green light for smaller, self-written efforts. Interviews to Kill

This collection of interviews of Brian De Palma, the celebrated filmmaker, reads as an insightful window into the world of filmmaking--not only in the 1970's and 80's, but up till the 2000's where many view his film career to have reached a lull (some consider it to have occurred before this date). However, that is not a detriment with this collection, in fact I found that the book was great, going from interview to interview, each conducted as a new film was coming out (i.e., one for Sisters, one for Phantom of the Paradise, one for Carrie..so on and so forth).

While this book may seem dated since it's last interview was around the time Mission to Mars debuted, it really isn't. Look at Truffaut's interviews with Hitchcock, as relevant as ever. However, if you are looking for a newer interview with the great De Palma, you can purchase the Criterion's DVD or BluRay copy of De Palma's masterpiece, Blow Out, which includes an hour long interview conducted by Noah Baumbach recorded in 2010 or 2011, which serves as nice companion piece to this collection.

I enjoyed reading this, and if you love the films of De Palma...or even if you don't, it will give you perhaps a better understanding of who the man is and the way he thinks. I recommend this book. Highly.

Great collection of interviews

Brian de Palma is my favorite director and this book reprints several interviews done at different points of his career. He comes off, not surprisingly, as a very intelligent man and offers insightful remarks about his movies, directing, and cinematic art in general. It's interesting to see how his perspective over some of his films varies throughout the years. Recommended to all fans. Also, I can say the only other book I've read about De Palma with similar quality to this one is the interviews by Blumenfeld & Vauchaud, which you should also get.

This is an excellent survey of interviews with De Palma over the years, and they prove a helpful guide for navigating his cinema and his interests (no wonder that Chris Dumas' UN-AMERICAN PSYCHO is so beholden to these interviews). A must-read for any De Palma fan.

The Author Was There

A very enjoyable and stimulating book, by an author who was there during Hollywood's Golden Age. He knew these stars personally. Kanin wore many hats, as a director, a screen writer, and a producer, to name a few. He focuses upon the magic of the greatest screen couples. It's a subject that could be more explored, so accustomed we are to the focus on individual stars. In fact, when a highly talented actor and actress grace the screen together, with good script writing and directors, they have the possibility of reinforcing and complimenting each other. It's only a possibility, and it rarely happens these days, but when it does, there is an extraordinary interplay which is much greater than the sum of two. Hence, the mystery, the joy, and magic of it.

For me, the greatest screen team was Fred Astaire and and Ginger Rogers, whose contributions were not only to film, but also to dance. The electricity between them, as Kanin demonstrates, was palpable, so full of life, fun, wit, and magic, were they. The poignancy of their partings and joinings are genuinely moving. He demonstrates quite clearly from the gut, what Hyam, Mueller, and Croce have analyzed in detail...that Rogers was hands down Astaire's greatest partner...both on the dance floor and off...for Ginger was an A-Level actress, as well.

I did not know that he had directed her in two of her smash solo films "Bachelor Mother" and "Tom, Dick, and Harry". And while he does repeat, the today clearly erroneous rumors about their dislike of one another (completely false), he does give proper and enthusiastic recognition to Rogers's individual career beyond musicals. In this he displays his direct knowledge of Ginger's aspirations at the time....and shed light upon the balance between individualism and complimentariness that seems to be the necessary ingredient in any successful duet....for before a partnership can be formed there need to be two strong and talented individuals who make the strongest possible commitment to truly create it.

He then examines, what he considers the screen's greatest pairing....Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Hepburn's and Tracy's acting prowess and integrity, deserve the respect of everyone...but the wonder of this pairing was also high on the scale of wit, and intelligence, and fun. For this more mature pair, it's the constancy of the attraction to one another, in the midst of their male/female misunderstandings that drives the action. It is Astaire and Rogers, who behave like a younger couple, more unstable, and whose lives are in the making...than a middle aged one, whose lives are already established, threatened by love to be de-stabilized. In this sense, these two great couples are just different...and one doesn't really need to choose between them.

Other teams I had forgotten about, who were just wonderful on screen, were Bogart and Becall, of course...but also, William Powell and Myrna Loy, and Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. To me, it is wonderful to read about these classic couples, and the others too. It puts a magic cast of excellence upon the whole enterprise of this endlessly enjoyable book...which is smartly illustrated with appropriate photos.

Kanin's fascinating subject matter is enhanced further by the fun he has with it: He ends the book with fictitious speculations in three chapters on: "Dream Teams", "Wrong Teams", and "Crazy Teams". It's a stroke of genius itself to end his book in this funny, thought provoking, and witty note.

Interesting but.....

I ran to buy this book after reading Kanin's superior autobiography "Hollywood" and his first person account of "Tracy and Hepburn". This book is a look at some of Hollywood's most enduring duos. But each pairing gets only a page or two before rushing on to the next. I wish he had chosen fewer subjects and confined himself to the ones he knew personally. His own observations are always insightful and informative. Obviously a great writer but this appears to be more of a paid assignment than a labor of love.

About the Author
Jason De León is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and Director of the Undocumented Migration Project, a long-term anthropological study of clandestine border crossings between Mexico and the United States. His academic work has been featured in numerous media outlets, including National Public Radio, the New York Times Magazine, Al Jazeera magazine, The Huffington Post, and Vice magazine. In 2013, De León was named a National Geographic Emerging Explorer.

I think this book gives great insight on what migrants have to go through when crossing them border to get to America. Even though I do not agree with what the author said about some things, this book was written very well and drew me in from the moment I started reading this book. I would definitely recommend people to read this book to learn a bit about migration and immigration policies.

About the Author
Thomas R. Arp received a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan (1954) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Stanford University. In 1955-1956, he produced educational television for the University of Michigan. He received an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1962 -- both from Stanford. He taught at Bowdoin College, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Hull University (England), and Southern Methodist University. Macmillan published his volume, THE FORM OF POETRY, in 1966, and he received a Fulbright lectureship at University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1969-1970. Arp joined Laurence Perrine in preparing revised editions of SOUND AND SENSE, STORY AND STRUCTURE, and LITERATURE: STRUCTURE, SOUND, AND SENSE beginning in 1982. He became sole author of the books in 1997 and was joined by Greg Johnson in 2002. Dr. Arp passed away in 2015.

Greg Johnson received an M.A. in English from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University. Dr. Johnson is the author of twelve books of fiction, poetry, criticism, and biography, including LAST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENEMY (Johns Hopkins, 2004), WOMEN I'VE KNOWN: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES (Ontario Review, 2007), the novel STICKY KISSES (Alyson Books, 2001), and several books on Joyce Carol Oates, including INVISIBLE WRITER: A BIOGRAPHY OF JOYCE CAROL OATES (Dutton, 1998) and JOYCE CAROL OATES: CONVERSATIONS 1970-2006 (Ontario Review, 2006). He joined the author team of PERRINE'S LITERATURE in 2002 and has been the sole author since Thomas Arp's passing in 2015.

Great price, great quality!!

If you do not want to expend unnecessarily your money, just get the 10Th edition of Perrine's Literature absolutely no difference with the 11Th edition maybe the page numbers differ but that is it. Very happy with the quality of my purchase highly recommended.

My 7 year old enjoyed having this book read to her. It's a fun one to read with lots of expression, so occasionally she would jump in and read in her fairytale voices. It was especially fun with our 7 and 9-year-olds discovered that they could read Apple White's cursive handwriting.

Justin Flom s path to crafting his own unique brand of magic has taken a circuitous route from his home town of Eden Prairie, Minnesota to Branson, Missouri to the SyFy Channel to some of the largest arenas in the country to being one of the first magicians to focus on social media on his way to becoming one of America s most sought-after magicians surpassing entertaining 100,000,000 fans in 2015. What sets Justin Flom apart from most other magicians is the simplicity of his magic and the fact that he cracked the code on doing close-up magic on giant stages. He holds the distinction of being the first magician ever to perform card tricks for a sold out crowd at the fabled Madison Square Garden.

Scott Flom is magic. Not because he's a magician, but because he's found time to nurture his passion for magic all while being a successful salesman, entrepreneur, husband, and father. Scott was fifteen years old when he began practicing simple magic tricks with his older brother, Larry. Soon this hobby became a way of life as Larry used magic in his job as a history teacher and Scott and his career as a salesman. Using his creative skills and building relationships, Scott was soon one of the top salesman for his company nationally. As Scott and his wife Lisa began raising a family, each child was taught life lessons through magic and variety arts. People would visit from all over the country to spend time at the Flom house, as you never knew what would unicycle or juggle by the dinner table. He built his home with secret passageways, talking wall fixtures, and even a bowling alley. Scott is still a top salesman, he is still building magic into his home, and he still sharing life lessons through magic. He would tell you his whole life has been an amazing magical adventure. Judy Flom-Hill is the proud aunt and godmother of Justin, and she has marveled at his magical prowess from the time he was two years old and starring in his family's magic productions. Her older brother, Larry, and her younger brother, Scott, awed her with their amazing feats of magic, the secrets of which they never divulged. Justin is now the third generation of Flom men to amaze and delight. She is the author of two suspense novels under the name of Judith Shoemaker-Hill. Writing Lady Lazarus and Know Thine Enemy was an exhilarating experience, but collaborating with her brother and nephew was a new and wonderful literary joyride.
